We’ve decided to take a few minutes of their time and talk with them in regard to how it’s been – to set base here on the booming North Coast, right in the heart of Sosúa – one of Dominican Republic’s most famous and magical beaches.
Tell us, who is the team behind Home Studio Design?
Hola! Hello! We’re a multinational team formed by Ingrid M. Romero (Dominican), Roland Widmann (Italian-German), Brigitte Fernández (North-American), Oelmy de Jesús (Dominican), Angel Guzmán (Dominican) and Alexia Marco (French-Mexican). It’s a good balance of local and foreign professionals, bringing a little bit of everything to the table.
We absolutely love your style. Where does it come from?
Well, I (Ingrid) studied Architecture at the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM – Santiago Campus) and graduated in 2016.
And Roland – born in Bressanone (Italy) – studied in Germany in the 80’s. Later, he went on to the Technical University of Munich (1989-1992) to earn a diploma as a Technical Engineer. We mesh well with our ideas and concepts.
So, how exactly did Home Studio Design come to be? Can you tell us a little bit of the story behind it?
Yes, we function as a workshop, where the dreams of our clients come alive in the shape of their homes. It’s where ideas are born and creativity flows. We actually started out rather simply, it was back in September 2019. We just had one laptop, a desk and USD$3,000; began designing for close friends to start launching ourselves as a new architecture o ce in Sosúa. And then, here we are.
How does Home Studio Design work? What do you offer?
HSD can be described as a space of imagination and communication. A place where resources are optimized to create spaces of well being and comfort for our customers. Currently our peak has been the architectural production of both residences and apartments but we aim to expand our market to larger scale designs.
Within our services we include: A full set of architectural plans, structural plans, sanitary plans and electrical plans; as well as renderings and a video presenting the project from the exterior. We understand that designing a home can be an overwhelming task. That is why we oLer comprehensive design services that cover everything from initial conceptualization to the final construction of the project. They pride themselves on their ability to listen to clients’ needs and design homes that not only meet their requirements but also exceed their expectations.
What is the inspiration behind some of your designs?
We make a point that the end result is functional, technological, smart and aesthetically pleasing- both inside and out. Each project is diLerent and has its special touch, making it very exciting when it’s time to design – there’s always a new form of inspiration emerging.
Our first talk/meeting with the client sets, in large part, the tone of the project. It is essential to connect, analyze their needs, to know how daring we can be – in terms of design, what styles they like, etc. For example, if they prefer modern architecture or if they want something more traditional… From there, ideas begin to emerge and we can work on generating proposals.
Are you inspired by any other architects or designers? Which ones?
Yes, most of our designs are inspired by great architects such as the american-german Mies Van der Rohe, the spanish-swiss Santiago Calatrava or the american Frank Lloyd Wright. We personally look up to their style due to the simplicity of their lines and pure volumetry which are the elements that give identity and harmony to each project. Architectural firms such as south-african SAOTA and the spanish A-cero are also a source of inspiration because of their innovation and constructive coherence in terms of modern design.
Any particular materials you lifie to use or include? Why?
We try to include organic building materials whenever possible, specially ones that oLer a sustainable alternative to synthetic materials, which are commonly used in construction. As people become more aware of the environmental impact of construction, organic building materials are becoming increasingly popular.
How has it been working alongside Realtor DR?
We collaborate very well. Particularly in the sense that our businesses operate in a very competitive market and we believe that together, with our skills and knowledge we can help find solutions to the perfect plot of land and build to satisfy our clients.
Who are your clients? What do they normally as for?
Most of our clients are foreigners, such as Canadians and Americans. Although we also have some Latinos. They’re all within an age range from 30 to 75 years old. Normally our clients come in requesting designs for modern villas of 3 or 4 bedrooms, with one or two levels. High ceilings with flat roof, high windows… maybe throw in a pool there just for fun.
This is how we work: Our design process begins with an initial consultation, where
we get to know clients and their vision for their dream home. Then we create a
comprehensive design proposal that includes floor plans, elevations, and 3D
renderings to give clients a clear picture of what their home will look like. The
team works closely with clients to refine the design until it meets their exact
specifications. Once the design is finalized, the construction phase begins, and
Home Studio Design manages every aspect of the project to ensure that it iscompleted to the highest standards.
Why did you pick Sosúa to work in? What makes this area so special?
We love it here! Architectural influences in the Caribbean are lively, eclectic and intriguing due to the many cultures that have journeyed over and laid roots in the region. Present day home styles and design derive primarily from the Ameridian and European Colonial cultures.
