This is an event that incorporates a Surf contest for ages 3-19, plus activities for the public including a domino tournament, bachata contest, volleyball tournament, skateboard contest, and indo-board contest.
The event is awarding about $4000 USD worth of prizes across all categories and will be a fun event for the entire family. The Junior Surf Contest will take place in Playa Encuentro, one of our favorite communities in the area. One reason RealtorDR loves Dominican Surf School is because of our long history together with Papito Santana. Not only has he given incredible service to every client and friend we’ve sent his way, his surf school and kids program have become an influential part of the Cabarete community.
Papito Santana the founder of Dominican Surf School used to spend time on Kite Beach helping tourists with their kites when the owner of a surf school offered Papito a lesson in Playa Encuentro. The next day, at 11 years old, Papito learned to surf and showed lots of natural talent. He worked on that beach for 15 years for the same surf school until he decided to open his own. Only a couple months later, coronavirus happened…
Since the moment beaches reopened in DR after the lockdown, Papito and his team of 100% Dominican staff have been coaching young athletes to become better surfers and strong competitors.
Years before the pandemic, Papito formed a strong friendship with Robert Macaechern, our CEO, after teaching the whole family how to surf. Robert and family would always spend time with Papito on their vacations to the DR and finally in 2019 they made the decision to relocate to the DR full-time.
In 2020 when the airports closed due to the coronavirus, beaches were closed and there were no tourists. Instead of giving up, Robert helped Papito put together a marketing plan so that when beaches were open again the school would be one step ahead. Papito did just that and created a summer camp for kids. The online registration 3 kids signed up but on that first Monday morning there were 35 kids on the beach with parents excited to send their kids away after months in lock down. Thanks to Robert for that initial help in a business plan, Dominican Surf School was able to be at the right place at the right time.
The initial surf camp turned into a surf academy for kids to get professional surf coaching before school and cross training after school with skateboarding and fitness classes involved.
Dominican Surf School is now the #1 school for young kids and the best surf school on the beach that offers surf coaching for all levels.
This work may seem like babysitting to some, but what we and the Cabarete community have seen are young kids learning commitment, dedication, and discipline through an amazing sport that’s connected to nature, in a beautiful place, with a team of passionate coaches that share the wonderful Dominican culture we love.
